Who We Are

Who We Come From

Dr. Hong-yen Hsu devoted his life to the study of Chinese herbal medicine. He was a prolific author, publisher, and teacher in Chinese herbal pharmacology, botany, and traditional medicine. Dr. Hsu was vital in bringing Chinese medicine to the attention of the western medical and scientific community. He published 59 books and 255 articles over his lifetime sharing scientific research, classical knowledge, clinical experience and standardized English nomenclature of Chinese herbs and formulas. As the first director of the Bureau of Drug Control in the Department of Health, Taiwan’s equivalent to the US Food & Drug Administration, he established standards to safeguard consumer health. Dr. Hsu was also inspired by the technology he witnessed in Japan while pursuing a PhD in Pharmacy at Kyoto University and went on to develop groundbreaking approaches in Chinese herbal standardization, extraction and quality control which earned him the title of “Father of Scientific Chinese Herbal Extraction”. Sun Ten was founded in 1946 by Dr. Hsu as a culmination of his expertise. We continue to look to modern science to secure the future of Chinese herbal extraction.
